The truly important things in life - love, beauty, and one's own uniqueness - are constantly being overlooked.

New art gallery evokes spirit of music

Spring Observer - News

A new art gallery in Old Town Spring features work inspired by soul-speaking music.

Joy’s Gallery artist Joy Beckler explores her intuition and her ability to capture mood through texture, tone and color as a means of communication. Through this method, she invites people to enjoy and relate to her work, perhaps as a gateway to each person’s own private, inner world.
“My art has always had a lot of feeling in it and a lot of faces in it,” Beckler said. “There’s a lot of color and usually a red splash somewhere in there. It is the kind of painting that you need to look at for a long time. There’s a lot of hidden elements in it that you are not going to see right away.”
Beckler hopes to host one or two shows a month, featuring other artists in the area as well as herself.
The gallery’s soft opening was Dec. 11. The grand opening will be at the end of January. The tentative hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday.
“Opening the gallery here just made sense. It is the right place and at the right time,” Beckler said.
She worked in the financial industry for years though she studied at the Art Institute of Houston and studied jewelry design and manufacturing at the Gemological Institute of America in California.
Beckler continued her artwork on and off in different capacities by creating murals on walls and commission pieces.
About two years ago, she decided to follow her dream and pursue a full-time career in art.
Recently, she has expanded her repertoire to include studies in pastel, with subjects ranging from wildlife to musical performances.
Beckler attends a lot of live shows in Austin looking for new sources of inspiration. In her artwork, she tries to capture the emotion of how a song resonates in her soul, she said.
Beckler hopes to have all different kinds of music playing during gallery showings.
Some of the rhythm and blues artists who have influenced Beckler are from the Austin music scene, including Porter Davis, Sam Baker and the Hudsons.
“The music has to be perfect when I’m painting,” she explained. “Most of the time I have to know the artist personally, so I can know their story and what makes them play the way they do. It helps me make that bridge from the sound to the visual to the feeling, and bring it all together to combine all three elements.”

A great venue to see live music up close and personal!

I'm a regular at the Pineywoods Performances in Conroe, TX.   My good friends Jamie and Katren Coumbe host some of the most amazing musicians in their living room.  Take a look at their blog and you'll also see some of my renderings of the musicans that have played there over the years.
